“[People] go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.”
St. Augustine of Hippo
We look at the marvels of nature and are astounded by the immense quality of creation, whether we attribute it to God or not. It is truly astounding and is likely to leave us in awesome reverence, if we truly observe it for what it is and what it represents. How many of us, who reverence nature and the simplicity and complexity of everything it represents, bother for one moment to consider the same qualities in ourselves?
Do we not know that we are a wonder of nature ourselves and every bit as complex and simple as the Grand Canyon or a single wildflower?
